Acute Care Medical/Surgical Hospital case study

NITHealth was hired as a major consultant. The work outlined below resulted in improvements in overall patient care, patient treatment, administrative control and financial cost.

An Acute Care Medical/Surgical Hospital founded in 1863 offers the community its expertise in maternal health, gynecology, perinatology, neonatology, pediatrics, emergency services, surgical services, same-day testing and treatment, rehabilitation, behavioral health, cardio-pulmonary services, oncology, and family medicine. The hospital also offers a number of on-site specialized services including centers for cardiac rehabilitation, endocrinology and metabolic disorders, pain management, swallowing disorders and prenatal diagnostic services. Off-site services include the family health, mental health and AIDS services.

History
On the verge of closing due to monetary constraints, the hospital joined hands with the government, paving the way for a municipal takeover that would save the organization, since it was the only hospital that serviced the local community in terms of health and employment.

The network infrastructure was in a dire need of upgrades. NITHealth was retained to replace and upgrade the infrastructure, and to assure the successful migration of data from the existing systems to the new upgraded infrastructure.

Technical Situation
The hospital had multiple domains, an older infrastructure made up of hubs and core switches, a T1 WAN connection, a local support environment, proprietary application suites, and a help desk ticketing system that needed to be replaced.

The Solution
NIT’s solutions were based on the industry’s best practices and the most cutting edge technology. The plans called for a complete data center rebuild, including replacing switches, upgrading WAN connections to dual T3 fiber, installing and purchasing routers, cabling, racks and servers, implementing and configuring firewalls and anti-virus/spam solutions, creating backup systems, clustered storage, and a facility build-out for the help desk and IT offices, as well as implementing disaster recovery plans. In addition, NIT was responsible for data migration, value added services and work flow systems.

The Benefits
Aside from providing technical upgrades, NIT worked closely with the hospital’s financial side in order to increase performance, productivity, Internet access and work flow by adding technology services that provide a strategic advantage in the market place. These include digital MRIs and CT Scans, bed management systems, wireless access points and PDA access for real time statistics, physical security and monitoring, operation management services, help desk staffing and help desk systems including telecom solutions for quality control, document management systems, patient and transport tracking services, as well as bedside value added services.
