Vendors for the healthcare industry

This case study details a project where Network Infrastructure Technologies Health was employed as a major consultant. The work outlined below resulted in increased mobility and connectivity for administration, more reliable service and data availability, and increased overall healthcare performance.

History
The company, founded in 1994, provides an outsourced software solution to the mission-critical planning, coordination, processing and fulfillment of orders for small- to medium-sized direct commerce companies. With operations based in New York, Boston and Toronto, it delivers on-demand service to companies worldwide.

Headquartered in New York, it is the leading developer of Software as a Service (SaaS) that supports the specific requirements of direct commerce companies, including order capture, fulfillment, inventory management, payment processing, database management and report generation.

Business Situation
After the company spun off from its parent company, its network was in need of separation from the parent company’s network for independent and seamless operation.

The Solution
The company has dedicated file servers and mail servers located and hosted by an outside company in Virginia. The outside company also hosts dedicated VPN connections to three of the main office locations in New York, Boston, and Toronto.

Each of the primary locations now contains a domain controller for network authentication. These servers are configured to replicate authentication information, so users traveling between sites do not have problems logging on to the network from another location.

There are dedicated VPN tunnels between each of the main office locations. Users at remote locations or working from home use VPN software to connect directly to the servers hosted in Virginia, which is also configured as a domain controller for authentication.

The network is configured so that each primary location is on a separate subnet. This allows for sharing files locally within each office, as well as providing file and printer sharing support between locations.

Each location also has a wireless access point so that laptops can connect to the network wirelessly.

Benefits
Network issues are diagnosed remotely, over the phone or in person, depending on the nature of the issue. Some issues are dealt with remotely. This allows a technician to see exactly what the user is seeing without physically being at the user’s location. This is helpful when a user having issues is in Boston, Toronto or a remote location. Users can also connect to their network from any Internet location through the use of their VPN software. This is installed on all laptops by default, but can be installed on a user’s home machine if so warranted. Once users are connected to the VPN, they can access all network resources as if they were in the office.
